DIY Ugly Christmas Sweater Tins

(This post is sponsored by Pirouline Cookies)

I have some news to share, y’all. This is my last Pirouline project. I’ve been creating DIY’s for Pirouline Cookies for the past 2 years, and I’ve loved the challenge of finding new ways to recycle these tins! But it’s time to move on to another project. If you’re looking for more recycled crafts, be sure to check out my past projects : You can find them all here.
For my last Pirouline project I am sharing a really fun one! Today I am creating Ugly Christmas Sweater tins! I love Ugly Christmas Sweaters, so I’m giving new life to thrift store sweaters by combining them with Pirouline cookie tins to make some fun holiday decor pieces!

Supplies:

  • Empty Pirouline Cookie Tins
  • Thrifted Christmas Sweaters
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue

Step 1. Cut your sweater sleeve to 2″ longer than your tin.

Step 2. Slide the sweater sleeve over the tin. If the sweater is a type that will fray, “hem” the top by folding it under and securing it with glue.

Step 3. Flip the tin upside down. Cut 4 equally spaced lines in the material hanging off the end of the tin, fold down the material and adhere it to the bottom of the tin.

That’s it, Now you can go shop at all of the thrift stores to hunt down the best sweater patterns! I was so in love with that nerd deer I found!

DIY Cork Board Tin

If you’re new here, I post recycled Pirouline tin crafts every month! You can find them all here.
Since it’s January I wanted to focus on an organizing type project, because the new year is the most perfect time to organize your studio and life!
I turned this tin into a corkboard, and it was super easy.
Supplies:
Empty Pirouline Tin
Cork Roll
Hot Glue
Scissors
Marker
I definitely recommend using cork on a roll, as it’s already curved and will shape around the tin really easily.
1. Cut a piece of cork to the size of your tin, so it wraps around.
2. Use hot glue to adhere the cork piece around the tin.
3. Trace the lid onto another piece of cork and cut out a circle for the top. Cut out a strip of cork to wrap around the sides of the lid.
4. Use hot glue to adhere.
That’s it! You can store pencils or other items inside of the tin, and attach notes and reminders to the outside with thumbtacks!
A reminder to make cookies is always good, right? Haha, although maybe that doesn’t fit in with most New Year Resolutions.

DIY Lisa Frank Supply Tins

This is a project in my Back-to-School Lisa Frank series!

This craft includes 3 of my favorite things- Lisa Frank, School Supplies, and Recycled Pirouline Tins! I’ve got these sitting in the top shelf of my IKEA Raskog cart holding paint brushes and pencils.

I did a few different tins. One of them I made the classic “Lisa Frank Cheetah Print”, just by using a bit of acrylic paint. For the other 2 tins I printed out some graphics of my favorite LF characters- Spotty & Dotty the dogs and the Aliens. I love those guys.

Supplies:

  • Empty Tins
  • Acrylic Paints
  • Paint Brushes
  • Decoupage Medium
  • Printed Designs

For the rainbow cheetah print tin, paint rainbow acrylic stripes around the tin. You’ll need a couple of coats to completely covered the printed tin.

Once the rainbow tin is dry, take either a bit of white paint or black paint and paint on a cheetah print pattern- squiggly circles!

To make the character tins, paint the tins a solid color. Print out the characters you want and decoupage them onto the fronts of the tins.
Other LF characters I think would make cute tins- The Dolphins, Space Unicorn, Painter Panda! There are just so many option!

What characters are your favorite?

DIY Ombre Beach Tins for Summer

If you’re new here, I post recycled Pirouline tin crafts every month! You can find them all here.

Earlier this month I shared Pirouline Cookie tins that I painted to look like watermelons, and now I want to share a second project for the month- Beach tins!
There is still plenty of time to hit the beach before Summer is over and everyone heads back to school, so now is a great time to make some beach tins! What are they?  Just fun, embellished tins to take to the beach with you! You could store basically anything in them- snacks, rocks, etc.
I used the large tin to collect sea glass, shells and rocks in! I LOVE hunting for sea glass, so this tin is super handy for storing the pieces I find (rather than putting them in my pocket and losing them!).

Supplies:

  • Empty tins
  • 1″ paint brush
  • White acrylic paint
  • Colored Acrylic Paints (I used Pink, Orange and Yellow)
  • Pencil
  • Liquid Glue
  • Decoupage Medium
  • Gold Glitter
  • Small #3 Paintbrush

1. Paint your tins ombre! Do this by painting the bottom third of the tin with your colored acrylic paint, and while it is still wet, slowly add white acrylic paint to your paint brush and blend the color upwards on the tin, so it gets lighter and lighter.

2. Use a pencil and lightly sketch out a shape onto the front of the tin. I recommend an ocean theme, I drew a star fish (the easiest!), a dolphin and a turtle.

3. Fill the shape in with liquid glue, and while it is still wet, sprinkle gold glitter over it.
Flip the tin over onto a extra sheet of paper (to save the excess glitter!). You can use a dry brush to clean up your shapes and brush off any glitter flakes that may be where they don’t belong.

4. Let the glitter/glue dry completely, and then paint over the glitter with a decoupage medium to seal it. This keeps the glitter from coming off at a touch.

Other fun shapes to draw on- whales, suns, flip flops, sun glasses, crabs, shells, waves, etc! The possibilities are endless!

Have you been to the ocean yet this Summer?

I live about 30 minutes from the Puget Sound, but this past weekend we were out at Port Worden, which is where I took these photos.

DIY Watermelon Tins

If you’re new here, I post a recycled Pirouline tin craft every month! You can find them all here.

For this months recycled Pirouline project I decided to embrace the Summery fruit icons that are trending! Around the web I’ve seen watermelon hats, citrus slice pool floats, pineapple cookies, etc. Fruit is in for the summer! Which is fine by me.

I used some of my favorite DecoArt acrylic paints to turn these empty Pirouline Cookie tins into watermelons!
Supplies:
  • Empty tins
  • Blue Painters Tape
  • 1″ paint brush
  • #4 paint brush
  • Lime green acrylic paint
  • Dark green acrylic paint
  • White acrylic paint
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Red, Pink or Yellow acrylic paint (for the melon color)

Note- Let the paint completely dry in between steps. You may need to add more than one coat of each color to fully cover the printed tin.
1. Start by taping placing a strip of tape about 1″ up from the bottom of the tins using the blue painters tape.

2. Paint the tin above the tape with pink. Or red or yellow, or whatever color you want your watermelon to be! Also paint the lid.

3.Move the tape down about a 1/4″ of an inch and paint the section between the tape and the painted pink white, for the watermelon rind.

4. Remove the tape and paint the bottom section of the tin in lime green. Once dry, use a #4 paint brush to paint little squiggles with dark green paint, as pictured below.

5. Use a #4 paint brush  with black acrylic paint to paint “seeds” onto your melon. They’re basically raindrop shaped, with the pointy end up.

There you have it! 3 tins that look good enough to eat. Okay maybe not, but I LOVE watermelon. It’s my favorite summer food.
I think these will be great table decor for the summer!

What color watermelon is your favorite?

DIY Tweed Recycled Pirouline Tins for Father’s Day

If you’re new here, I post a recycled Pirouline tin craft every month! You can find them all here.

For this months recycled Pirouline project I decided to restyled some tins inspired by Father’s day! I gave these tins little tweed suits so they look so gentleman-ly.
If you aren’t familiar with it, Tweed is a “rough, woolen fabric, of a soft, open, flexible texture, resembling cheviot or homespun, but more closely woven. It is usually woven with a plain weave, twill or herringbone structure.”
I plan on filling one of these up with candies to give to my Dad on Father’s day!

Here’s how to make your own:
Supplies:
  • Empty Pirouline Tins
  • Tweed Fabric
  • Hot Glue
  • Scissors
  • Black Acrylic Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Buttons
1. Start by cutting a piece of tweed down to fit your tin. You want it to wrap all the way around, and go up to where the lid closes.

2. Use hot glue to adhere the tweed around the tin.

3. Use black acrylic paint to color your lids black. You could do these any color you wish, I just liked the simple black paint, that makes the suits stand out.

4.  Next you’ll need to make either a tie or a bow tie to embellish the suits!  These are both pretty easy.

The tie is just a simple cut out shape.

Bow-ties are also pretty easy.

  1. Cut a 6″ x 1″ strip of felt.
  2. Glue the 2 ends to the middle, so you have 2 loops.
  3. Pinch the middle.
  4. Glue a 1/2″x3″ strip of felt around the middle.

5. To finish them off, adhere your tie/bow-tie on and add on buttons!

For the red tie suit, I also added on a felt collar. To do that I simply cut a 1″ strip of tan felt to wrap around the top of the tin.

These worked up in no time at all and I am so pleased with just how stinking cute they turned out. I hope my Dad likes them!

What do you think?

DIY Valentines Pet Mini Album

If you’re new here, I post a recycled Pirouline tin craft every month! You can find them all here.

This is actually a second recycled Pirouline project for the month of February. There are just so many possibilities for Valentines projects, which is why I made this mini album!

This past weekend I got 2 new baby guinea pigs, 2 girls that I named Milky Way and Mars and they are both sooo adorable that I had to scrapbook them. I thought it would be fun to make a “Valentines” themed album, featuring my furry friends!

Supplies:
  • 2 Pirouline Tin Lids
  • 1″ Binder Ring
  • Awl
  • 3.5″ Circle Template
  • Glitter Washi Tape
  • Twine
  • Adhesive
  • Scrapbooking Paper and Embellishments

The Pirouline tin lids make the covers of the mini album, with one facing up and one facing down.

1. Start by punching a hole into the tops of both of your lids.

2. Next decorate your covers. This could be done SO many different ways. I covered the tops with glitter washi tape and then adhered twine around the sides of the lids.

3. Cut scrapbooking papers down to fit the inside of your lids. I use my die cut machine (Brother ScanNCut) to cut 3.5″ circles, but you could also print out and cut out a circle template to use.

4. Adhere your photos onto the backsides of the paper circles and punch holes in the tops. Feel free to add stickers and embellishments.

5. Bind everything together with a binder ring.

I printed our some photos in color and some in black and white. Here are my pages:

What is something you have made a mini album out of? Cookie Tins?
