ILTC Sparkle Ugly Christmas Sweater- Star Trek Style

Hey guys, today I’m super excited to be a part of I Love to Create’s “Sparkle Ugly Sweater” campaign! If you’ve been invited to an Ugly Christmas Sweater party this year, you can find some awesome Holiday Inspiration here.
All you need is a thrift store sweater and some of the fantastic products from Tulip. My personal favorite is their iron-on glitter sheets! I love those!
*I wrote this post as part of a paid campaign with I Love to Create and Blueprint Social;
they sent me the products for free and I was paid for writing this post.*

ILTC sent me a fantastic group of products, like fabric paints and glitter iron on sheets, to restyle a sweater with. But I am such a nerd. I couldn’t make just a Christmas sweater, mine is a Star Trek Christmas Sweater, which is very logical, right?

If you’re a trekkie, like me, Here’s how to make your own sparkly Spock ugly Christmas sweater!
Supplies: Thrifted Sweater, Fabric Paint, Dimensional Glitter Fabric Paint, Glitter Bond, Fashion Glitter, Iron-on Transfer Glitter Sheets, Coloring Page, Scissors, Paintbrush

1. I started by finding a coloring page or drawing of spock (or the person you want to paint on your sweater). Cut out around it.

2. Next I cut the coloring page up, so that I was just using his shirt. I placed it on my sweater and drew around it with Tulip’s Dimensional Glitter Fabric Paint. After that, I removed the shirt template and filled in the area with my glitter fabric paint.

3. Next you’ll want to repeat step 2 with his head- Cut off the collar and hair and place the head where it should go. Trace around it, this time with Tulip’s Fabric Paint ( I mixed a little white and gold together) and then fill the area in.

4. Repeat the same step with the collar and hair, only this time using black fabric paint.

5. For the face, I honestly just free handed Spocks face with a tiny paint brush and Tulip’s Fabric Paint. You could cut up the face template further and use it as a template if you needed to.
I also outlined the rest of him with the black paint.

6. Use Glitter Bond and Gold Fashion Glitter to put the starfleet logo on Spocks shirt.

7. Now Spock needs a santa hat! Sketch one out on the backside of a red Iron On Glitter Transfer Sheet and cut it out. Iron it down, following the directions.

8. Use Glitter Bond and White Fashion Glitter to add on the “fur” of the Santa hat.

9. To finish off my sweater, I added my saying, Trek the Halls, with some of the Iron On Glitter Transfer Sheets. I actually cut them out on my Silhouette Portrait machine.

I don’t think I’m going to an ugly Christmas sweater party this year, but I still think this is an amazing sweater & a fun project to do!

Handmade Holidays Blog Hop

Handmade Holidays 2014 Hop Logo

Welcome to the 4th Annual Handmade Holidays Blog Hop! A few years ago we were looking online for handmade gift ideas and thought it would be great if there was a resource dedicated JUST to handmade gift ideas. Enter the Handmade Holidays hop!

We’ve gathered over 100 of our creative blogger friends in the craft industry as well as some of our fellow product manufacturers to bring you a plethora of inspiring gift ideas you can make now to give to your friends, family, and colleagues. Pin and bookmark these ideas for this holiday season and to use throughout the year!

Each day of the hop features approximately 30 gift projects and you can “hop” from one blog to another to check them all out.

My Project:

My sponsors for this hop were Walnut Hollow, Oly*Fun, Sakura and ICE Resin, so I created this project using some of their products.

My gift is one made with geeks in mind! So whether you have a friend that is a trekkie, a star wars fan, a whovian or just an all around nerd, space is the final frontier! So anything galaxy themed is the perfect gift for your geeky friend!

Supplies: Wooden Clock, Clock Kit, Black Paint, Paint Brush, Oly Fun Material, Gelly Roll Moonlight Pens, Glue Pen, Fine Silver Glitter, Liquid Glue (like Mod Podge or 450 Quick Dry) Ice Resin
1. Paint your clock black.

2. Cut out swirls from your Oly*Fun material. You can sketch onto the material first to create a pattern, but I just free handed them with a pair of scissors. Remember, it’s a galaxy, it doesn’t have to be perfect.

3. Brush a liquid glue onto the back of your Oly*Fun swirls and decoupage them down onto your clock. This is where you get to be creative and create a galaxy!

4. Time to get out your gelly roll pens and further embellish your galaxy. My best tips:

  • Swirls. They’re super simple (anyone can draw a swirl) and work really well with the galaxy theme.
  • Dots, This could be space dust, right?
  • Circles. Somewhat like dots, only larger. They’re easy and add texture to your galaxy.
  • Stars. Every galaxy needs stars and it’s another simple shape to make.

At this point, I decided my galaxy needed a moon in the foreground. Here’s how to make one:

5. Cut out a 3″ circle from gray Oly*Fun material as well as a few dots and a quarter circle. Scallop one edge of the quarter circle so that it’s wavy. Glue them down onto the 3″ circle. Glue the moon onto the clock.

6. Take a black Gelly Roll pen and add doodles to your moon. I outlined my material and added a bunch of dots to look like craters,

7. Take your Quickie Glue Pen and draw some swirls, stars and dots around your galaxy. While the glue is still wet, sprinkle silver glitter over your glue doodles. Knock off the excess glitter.

Time to give it a glossy look!

8, Squirt out equal amounts of resin and hardener into a disposable cup and stir for one minute or following the directions on the package. (I used the entire amount of resin in the 1.oz kit.)

9. Pour your mixed resin onto your clock and smooth it out using a brush. Let it dry completely (I recommend overnight).

10. Follow the instructions of your clock kit to put your clock together.

11. Place your clock numbers equally around your circle, mashing them down to secure them good. It’s extremely important that they’re spaced out equally- You don’t want to be running late because your number was in the wrong place!

And that is it! You now have an amazingly geeky and awesome galaxy clock!

Spock Deskmate Softie DIY + Pattern

Hi everyone! I’m Alicia from Felt With Love Designs where my husband, Patrick, and I write about all of our crafty and artistic endeavors. Patrick is the artist behind our designs. I create patterns from his sketches and bring them to life with a needle and thread. While we specialize in felt creations, we are also passionate about family, creative writing, crafts, drawing, reading, sewing, and education.
Enough about us!

Today, we would like to share a tutorial and free pattern to make your own Spock Deskmate softie!

Spock Softie Deskmate Free Pattern - Felt With Love Designs

We came up with the idea for Deskmates specifically for Punk Projects! We wanted to design a softie pattern to share who also serves a purpose. Adding a small weight to the bottom not only helps him stand and keep you company on your desk but also assists as a paperweight!

When designing this project, I honestly didn’t know how he would turn out but I was quite pleasantly surprised. The creation of Spock inspired Patrick to sketch an entire line of geeky characters! In fact, yesterday we shared Captain Kirk over on our blog. If you like Spock, you need to come check him out as well!
To make your own Spock you will need:

  • The Pattern
  • Felt (black, tan, blue, grey)
  • Softie eyes (You could also use buttons or cut circles from felt)
  • thread to match felt
  • needle
  • scissors
  • Felt Glue (optional)

To make Spock:

  1. Cut all of the pieces from felt (I did not include a seam allowance in the pattern, except on the shirt pieces. For the body pieces and the head, cut an extra 1/4″ all the way around. For the hair, cut an extra 1/4″ around the top, where the hair will merge into the seam.) Spock 1
  2. Attach the grey badge piece to the front shirt piece. I used felt glue to make it a bit sturdier but you can also stitch the badge on.
  3. Using blue thread and a running stitch, sew the front shirt piece to the front body piece. Repeat for the back.Spock 4
  4. Glue together the front and back of each ear. Again, stitching will work but I glued them to make the ears sturdier.
  5. Cut slits in the hair to define the sideburns and place each ear behind each sideburn. Spock 2
  6. Starting behind the right ear, sew down the hair making sure to sew through the ears to attach them in place. Sew across forehead and down left sideburn, in front of ear, and then back down behind ear.
  7. Place the eyebrows below the hairline and sew or glue in place.
  8. Install eyes (or sew in place, if you use felt.)
  9. Stitch a straight black line for the mouth. Spock 3
  10. Line up the face with the front body piece and sew together at the neckline. Repeat with the back. Spock 5
  11. Place front and back pieces together, right sides facing, and sew together, leaving the bottom open.
  12. Cut an oval of felt just wider than the bottom opening (it should be a little over 3 1/2″ wide by a little over 2″ tall) and sew it to the bottom on the front side, from seam to seam, leaving the back open. Spock 6
  13. Flip the softie inside out and stuff.
  14. Optional: I sewed up a small “beanbag” full of rice to stuff in the bottom of the softie to weight it down and help it stand.
  15. Stitch the bottom shut by hand.

Spock Deskmate Standing

If you like Spock, be sure to come by Felt With Love Designs and check out Captain Kirk!

As I mentioned, Hubby is in the process of sketching out quite a few more geeky buddies to occupy everyone’s desks.
Do you have a favorite character Star Trek or otherwise? Let us know who you would like to see next!!

Thank you for having us today! It was a pleasure to share our latest creation with all of you!

Custom Star Trek Into Darkness Toms

I received a request for a pair of custom Star Trek Into Darkness themed Toms shoes and I must say I love these shoes! I loved Star Trek Into Darkness so I was excited to get a request for these.

I actually rewatched the new movie (for about the 3rd time, I think?) while I was designing these. I’ve got the crew of the Enterprise scattered around the shoes, as well as Khan on one side of the shoe.
On the front of the left shoe I decided to do the scene where it’s the Enterprise vs the Vengeance, So I painted outer space behind the 2 ships.

If you’re interested in my custom shoes, please check out my Etsy shop for more info! 🙂

I’m currently having a Pre-Christmas sale in my shop, so you can use the code CHRISTMASSHOES to get 20% off your order!

Star Trek Science Officer Laptop Sleeve DIY

My project for the day is a Star Trek Uniform Laptop Sleeve! I have a sturdy case that I use for my laptop if I’m going on a trip but if I’m just running up to the library with it or something I just use a sleeve. However I was getting tired of my last laptop sleeve so it was definitely time for a new one. and I love this one! 🙂

Supplies: 1/2 yard of blue felt, 1/4 yard of black felt, 1 sheet of grey felt, Black thread, sewing machine

1. Measure your laptop, add about 2″ to each measurement and cut 4 sheets of your blue felt to the new measurement. For example my laptop is 15″x11″ so I cut my felt 17″x13″.
Cut a black V shape from black felt the width of your blue felt and about 3″ tall. Also cut out a 2″ communicator from grey felt.
2. Stitch down your small pieces onto one of your blue felt rectangles.
3. Separate your 4 blue rectangles into pairs of 2, placing them right sides together. Stitch along on of the shorter sides and flip right side out so the one end has a finished edge.
4. Stitch along the finished edge. This is just stitching the two pieces together so that they stay flat and don’t move around.
5. Place your 2 pieces right sides together and stitch down the sides and bottoms leaving the top open.
6. Flip right side out.

If you want it a bit thicker you could add a layer of batting in between the layers of felt but I think with 2 pieces of felt on each side it’s enough padding for my old laptop. Unless it was a redshirt. then it would need all the extra padding available!

So, have you Star Trek Into Darkness yet? Taylor and I went to see it last night and it was AMAZING! I absolutely loved it, loved every second of it!

Now I want to do even more geeky things, and put Star Trek themes on all the crafts! haha.
