Get Messy – Experimenting with Pen + Ink

This week I have been taking the Get Messy online course – Pen + Ink.

The course was created by my friend Julia, who has such a fun and unique style that you can pick it out anywhere, and I was super excited to find out she was sharing her techniques in this class!

Pen + Ink is a course that is all about 3 simple tools: water, pens and inks. I had never really used liquid inks much before this class, but I love my markers and the watercolor looks so I was excited to experiment with inks as well.

I started the class on Thursday, and have been watching the videos and experimenting with the techniques for the past 4 days and it’s so much fun!

Today I wanted to show you my work and pages inspired by the class.

I started out by doing a lot of loose doodles and designs on mixed media paper. For markers I am using Tombow Dual Brush Pens and Tombow TwinTones.

I don’t have the same ink that Julia used in her class, but I used ImagineCrafts All Purpose Inks (meant for fabric I think?) and they seem to be working okay for these techniques!

I decided to make a mini journal dedicated just for these techniques so that I could work on making art journals pages with them, so I am using a notebook by Amy Tangerine for that.

The first couple of pages aren’t my normal style, but I still love them. After those I started trying to work Julia’s whimsical style in with my own style.

The best part about this class is that while Julia shows you some really amazing techniques combining markers and ink, she also doesn’t tell you exactly what you must do, she encourages you to experiment with your supplies! So it’s really fun.

This class is perfect for anyone who wants to learn a technique but especially perfect if you’ve been in a creative rut and you want something new.
